The start of the construction process of the new Ronald McDonald House on the Sanford Health campus began on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 4:30pm. The official Ground Breaking Ceremony took place in the open lot just north of the new Make-A-Wish building, at 17th Street and Lake Avenue. The emcee was Mark Shlanta, Board Chair of Sioux Falls Development Foundation, Inc. Other speakers included: Dean Buckneberg, Chairman, Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce; Dave Munson, Mayor, City of Sioux Falls; Dr. Charles O’Brien, President, Sanford USD Medical Center; Marsha Frericks, Executive Director, Ronald McDonald House Charities of SD; and Paul Nelsen, Board of Trustees Chair, Sioux Empire Home Builders Care Foundation.
The new 18-bedroom home will have almost 25,000 square feet when completed in the summer of 2009. The mission of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota is to support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children. The home, which is on land donated by Sanford Health, will be where families can have a comforting place to stay with warm meals while their seriously ill child receives medical attention. The Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire has generously offered to assist in the construction process of the $3.2 million project by helping build the home with direct donations and fundraising efforts from both the HBASE membership and the public
