2010 Sioux Falls Road Construction Proposed Projects
(subject to change)
Interstate 90 and Marion Road Interchange
The South Dakota Department of Transportation will be constructing a new interchange along Interstate 90 and Marion Road. The interchange will include the paving of Marion Road from 60th Street North to 1/4 mile north of Interstate 90. Marion Road will be completely closed to traffic. Interstate traffic will be reduced to head to head traffic at various times throughout the project however, will remain open to traffic. The project will begin in early spring.
69th Street and Tallgrass Avenue Intersection Improvements
The area of 69th Street and Tallgrass Avenue will be changing in the next few years with anticipated development. The arterial street intersection of 69th Street and Tallgrass Avenue is currently gravel. Improvements in 2009 included underground utility improvements and in 2010 grading and paving operations are anticipated, pending available funding and successful property owner negotiations. This project will completely close the streets off to traffic. Local access to the medical facilities will be maintained at all times. This project is still under design.
41st Street Big Sioux River Bridge Replacement
This year the 41st Street Big Sioux River Bridge will be totally reconstructed. The 2009 traffic counts in this area showed approximately 40,000 vehicles travel this road daily. The project is expected to begin late winter and anticipated completion is by November. The street will maintain two lanes of travel in each direction across the bridge throughout the construction season. The drivers will not be allowed to make left turns in the construction area. Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to find alternate routes. This project, along with the Flood Control Project, is expected to closed the bike trail for the duration. The bike trail will be detoured to an on street route and signs will be posted accordingly.
69th Street and Southeastern Avenue Arterial Improvements
The two arterials of Southeastern Avenue and 69th Street are currently rural gravel roads. Over the next two years, the City will be reconstructing urban improvements on Southeastern Avenue from Chatham Street to 1/4 mile south of 69th Street and on 69th Street from Charger Avenue to 1/4 mile east of Southeastern Avenue. Both streets have unique features planned to be constructed. A railroad overpass will be constructed on 69th Street (similar to the newly constructed overpass on 57th Street) to allow for improved safety for vehicle and pedestrians crossing the tracks. 69th Street will be constructed as a four lane section with a landscaped median and sidewalks. On Southeastern Avenue, four lanes with a median are also planned to be constructed. In addition, a new multi-lane roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of 69th Street and Southeastern Avenue. Roundabouts provide for a safer, more efficient movement of traffic versus a traffic signal. For more information on roundabouts see the Public Works website. Both streets will be graded and underground utilities installed in 2010 with the final paving occurring in 2011. Both streets will be completely closed to traffic.
Maple Street: Career Avenue to Marion Road
This east/west arterial street has experienced a significant increase in traffic volumes over the past five years and additional capacity is needed. This street will be widened to a four lane with landscaped median section, including street lighting and sidewalks. This street will also serve a new collector street west of Marion Road that will provide access to a new elementary school, fire station, and park. This project is anticipated to be bid late spring pending successful property owner negotiations.
Powderhouse Road: Arrowhead Parkway to Madison Street
The City of Sioux Falls and the South Dakota Department of Transportation will be jointly continuing the construction of SD100 (formerly the Eastside Corridor). The next phase of construction is from Arrowhead Parkway to Madison Street. The existing gravel road will be ultimately built out to a six lane concrete street with a landscaped median. This year's project will only include the construction of the west half of the street. The project will begin early spring and will be totally closed off to traffic during the construction project.
