Homeownership still considered the "American Dream"
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) commissioned a national survey in May of 2,000 likely voters (73% homeowners) to gather their thoughts and feelings on homeownership. Despite recent economy hardships nationwide, consumers still feel very strongly about this aspiration.
While using two of the top pollsters in the country (one Democrat and one Republican), the findings revealed the value that voters place on homeownership and also their support of various housing policies to support homeownership at the national level.
Bullet points listed below are just a glimpse at some of poll results, showing that owning a home is still a very important part of many American’s lives.
• 75% of voters say that owning a home is the best long-term investment they can make
• 73% of voters who currently don’t own a home say it’s a dream of theirs to eventually buy one
• 95 percent of home owners say they are happy with their decision to own a home, and believe that owning their own home is important
• 80% of current home owners would advise a close friend or family member just starting out to buy a home
