Feature Homes Raise $14,000
September 24, 2019
The Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire is pleased to announce that over $14,000 was raised through the two Feature Homes on the 2019 Fall Parade of Homes™, September 14-15 & 21-22. A special thank you to Deffenbaugh Homes and Top Construction for hosting the two homes.
Proceeds from the two homes benefit the Sioux Empire Home Builders Care Foundation which was established in 2007 as a 501(c)3 charitable, non-profit organization. The Sioux Empire Home Builders Care Foundation is dedicated to the future of the home building industry in Minnehaha, Lincoln, McCook and Turner Counties. The foundation receives funds through donations and also from various public fundraisers including touring the Feature Homes on the Parade of Homes. The Sioux Empire Home Builders Care Foundation supports programs such as housing related community service projects, providing scholarships for students going into the building trades and financially supporting other building industry related educational programs.
Workforce Development Grants
The Workforce Development Grant serves to provide funding for projects that address a demonstrated need in the building industry, encourage and attract competent people to a career in the construction trades and create a positive impact on builder workforce issues in the Sioux Empire. In 2019, the Care Foundation partnered with the Harrisburg School District by granting funds towards the construction of the Home Builders Academy. In this new building, students will learn the basic skills needed to construct a home. The building broke ground July 2019 with construction planned to be completed in 2019. Other grants have been awarded to Tea High School for tools as well as to O’Gorman High School to start a shop class.
Repair Affair Day
Repair Affair day allows volunteers to donate their time and expertise to someone in need. The focus of Repair Affair is on making homes more accessible for the elderly or permanently disabled with items such as wheelchair ramps and grab bars. Since 1993, more than 250 projects have been completed with the help of more than 6,000 volunteer hours.
A number of scholarships are awarded annually to high school graduates who reside in Lincoln, Minnehaha, McCook or Turner counties and have applied for acceptance into a secondary school curriculum within the home building industry.
Summer Construction Camp
In 2019, the fourth year of the annual Summer Construction Camp was held at the Sioux Falls Career and Technical Education Academy. The camp was created for 7th and 8th graders that are showing an interest in carpentry, construction and woodworking. The camp includes four half days of hands-on activities. Students learn about safety, hand tool operation, basic skills in the carpentry trade all while having an opportunity to assist in building projects.
